About Strawberries

Spring

Strawberry growing in the Midwest is a very involved event. I would like to start in the spring and tell you what it takes to bring fresh strawberries from our farm to your table.

Spring has arrived! Strawberries are Perennial plant (survive winter) and each field is kept 4-5 years before it is replaced by younger plants.

Removing Straw

The first job is to remove straw.

Raking

Not all of it can be done by tractor so we still use a hand rake to take off a portion of each field.

As soon as the ground has thawed we plant baby strawberry plants.

Growth

New plants ready to grow.

Fertilize

Plants in the spring need lots of energy to start to grow so we fertilize them early on so they can start producing blossoms.

Taking off Blossoms

One of the next big jobs is to pick off the blossoms on the new planning so they put all their energy into plants.

Frost Protection

On cold nights we use sprinklers to keep the blossoms for freezing

Picking Season

Soon the long awaited for strawberries arrive and each one is lovingly picked by hand for you!

Covering for Winter

After the season lots of care needs to happen to keep the weeds under control but finally as fall arrives we put the plants back under a golden blanket of straw so they can stay warm and alive to make more berries next year.
